Eighteen feat. Mistah FAB + Go Smart

My Ghetto Report Card

Well on the eve of probably one of the most anticipated bay area albums ever, I feel it wouldn't be right to not remind everyone to go cop one of the E-40's new album tommorow. I guess a bootleg copy has been circulating around the internet, but I trust that everyone is gonna go buy one even though they got the bootleg. Well Anyways, here are some new ones for today...

Timber

First and foremost, this song goes hard...Eighteen is a one of Sean T young rappers who is repping the Haystack to the fullest. The beat on this track is some of Sean T's best work in my opinion. He got Fabby Davis spittin a nice verse to compliment his own smooth flow. He supposedly has a self titled album coming up soon, so keep a lookout for that.

Go Smart?

Haha I had to listen to this one a couple times before i actually realized what they were talkin about. I'm not completely sure who sings this one, and I would appreciate if someone could find that out for me. Kinda sounds like Western Conference to me, but they are talkin about Oakland so who knows. But I'm kinda feeling that track because they are spitting some true facts, but it's borderline hater status because they are callin out all the bandwagon Baydestrians. You guys be the judge and let me know what you think.

???????- Go Smart

Bag Back (remix)

I ripped this off of KMEL on friday night and did a lil research on it. The song is by Mr.Midas who is from down south in the LA area. I hadn't heard of him prior to this song but its not too bad. He gets Clyde Carson on this remix version, so you know its gonna be pretty nice. But yea it's good to see LA collabin' with the bay these days. Damani and Keak Da Sneak, and now Mr.Midas and Clyde. Enjoy.

I haven't gotten to listening those songs you posted yet (but with the likes of FAB and Clyde up there, I'm sure it's all good); that'll have to be for another post.

I just wanted to say that I copped "My Ghetto Report Card" this morning. I'll probably post up a full review at some site like amazon or something at a later date, and I know I really oughta spin the record a few more times and let it sink in before I jump to conclusions.

But I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I'm pretty disappointed in the album ... I mean, I know all the flaws with the album was stuff we've all known for a long time - namely, all the Lil' John tracks, and the fact that there are more Southern guests on the album than Bay dudes. But I think just about all of us can agree "Tell Me When to Go" was dope, so I was hoping Lil' John could bring heat on at least a couple more tracks. But "Muscle Cars" is pretty much the only other good beat he has on the record - leaving 7 pretty crappy filler beats from him. And as far as guests go, of course Bun-B is tight, but pretty much all the other southern guests I couldn't care less about.

Rick Rock's songs are definetely the highlight of the album, though admitedly, they're also the ones that are gonna take a while for me to get used to (as most Ricky Rock beats do). Droop-E's beat is just plain weird (I think all the people telling him he needed to change up his style got to his head; he's been doing some really weird stuff lately), and the tracks by the remaining producers were pretty much all filler, too.

So, by and large, the main problem I have with this album is that, for an album that was supposed to wake up the world to the bay, it sure as hell spends alot of time in the south (even alot of the beats spend time in the more "crunk"-ish tempos). You even see 40 in alot of interviews these days saying "hyphy is just another word for crunk". But, when you think about it, southern rap still has at least a couple good more years of life left in it (of selling music to mainstream kids), and it doesn't make sense for major labels to kill a good thing, so I think they're just trying to tell people "if you like crunk, you might like this too!". But if this is what it takes for a more authentically bay album to get released on a major, I'd still consider "My Ghetto Report Card" an important album.

I feel you on that mornview...I'm not saying I dont really like album, because i do. But is it the best bay area album since the movement begun, which is was highlighted to be? Definetly not.

The main problem i have is with a song like "tell me when to go"...Now yes it is catchy and fun to dance to, but is that the song we want people defining as the Bay Area brand of music? Im not sure. And let me reitterate that I am in now shape or form trying to bash on 40 water because we all know he is the ambassador.

Personally, I wish the The Team or Ya Boy were getting some national looks right now. Because I think it is safe to say (until Turf's West Coast Vaccine comes out), that those two artists have put out the best albums in the past couple years.

Last but not least, my view on Ghetto Report Card: Considering how much hype was put into the album, it might be safe to say it was a lil bit of a bummer. But in all reality, i think we have all elevated E-40 to whole new standard, so therefore we expect him to come with something hot every single time he steps in the lab. Im giving it 3.5 outta 5 stars.

Opinions anyone else?
